Experience
Electrical Engineer I
, City of Ocala – Ocala Electric Utility – Ocala, FL- Served as Project Lead for the utility’s migration from ArcFM/Designer to AutoCAD Map 3D Automated Utility Design (AUD), developing the master AUD design template and writing custom integrations for workorder management and ERP costing, Compatible Units (CU), and materials synchronization.
- Design and engineer overhead and underground municipal electric distribution infrastructure, commercial and residential service upgrades, and system reliability improvements.
- Coordinate utility relocations, right-of-way alignments, and third-party joint-use pole attachment permitting compliance with FDOT, county agencies, and telecommunications providers.
- Conduct field diagnostics, power quality assessments, and radio frequency interference (RFI) investigations across utility distribution lines and transformer equipment.
Electrical Engineer
, Composite-FX – Trenton, FL- Developed, built, and tested the XEV all-electric prototype helicopter utilizing a 100kW Emrax PMAC motor with a VFD using field-oriented control, a custom-built 15 kWh 350VDC NMC Li-ion battery pack, 100-cell battery management system, and a custom-made vehicle interface module. Presented at the 2022 Oshkosh airshow and seen by over 5 million people on Youtube.
- Developed schematics for various helicopter models, wrote procedure manuals on engine ECU check-out/commissioning, and created improved ECU tunes to create a standardized method for wiring and ECU commissioning.
- Performed troubleshooting and root-cause failure analysis on helicopter electrical systems, engine sensors, and ECUs to implement improvements and repairs to enhance overall reliability and performance.
- Designed an airspeed PCB assembly for integration into the ECU datalog and for use in avionics over CANbus using Altium Designer and LTSpice.
- Designed and commissioned an in-house EFIS/EMS avionics platform (“electronic flight information system” and “engine management system”) utilizing the ECU’s CANbus for our helicopters, creating a sub-$1000 avionics display tailored to our helicopters.
- Created a test jig for measuring the airflow through the helicopter engine’s throttle body to ensure each cylinder’s intake butterfly valves are matched utilizing a custom-designed PCB and a mass airflow sensor. This improved our ability to ensure safe, reliable engine operation and performance before customer handover.
- Assisted in the day-to-day maintenance and repairs of our facilities and equipment. Performed board level repair on the servo drive as well as lightning-caused power supply damage on our Hass CNC mills, ensuring minimum downtime to our manufacturing operations. Performed 3 phase installation/maintenance including panel breaker installation, running new conduit/wiring, and replacing damaged 3 phase motors.
Projects
Non-profit Retirement Home for Horses Solar Projects
Picture Portfolio: solarprojects.matthewalborn.com- Designed and built two solar systems for a local non-profit that rescues abused and retired police horses.
- 2021 Barn Solar Project: 1.7 kWh array, Schneider electric inverter system, a MPPT charge controller, and a 18 kWh 48V lead acid battery pack. Designed to provide lighting, cold water, refrigerator, and fans to workers in a remote feed barn while filling buckets and preparing medications for the horses.
- 2023 Workshop Solar Project: 4.6 kWh array, Victron inverter/MPPT system, and a 15 kWh 54V LiFePO4 battery pack and BMS. Created to support a new workshop building containing fans, lights, cold water, a two-post industrial lift, air compressors, refrigerator, and small welder. Also did all indoor electrical installation to include conduit, wiring, outlets, panel, etc. To enable the farm to repair/maintain tractors, mowers, UTVs, and other equipment in house.
